James Durran

James Durran is an Advanced Skills Teacher at the Parkside Federation in Cambridge, and was formerly Head of English, Media and Drama at Parkside Community College. He has developed innovative approaches to teaching the moving image, especially to younger students, and has pioneered media arts projects with primary schools.

James is involved nationally in developing and disseminating excellent practice in the teaching of both English and media, including consultancy work for the BFI, the DfES, QCA, the BBC, Immersive Education and Teachers’ TV.

He delivers training and professional development across the UK for schools, advisors and consultants, LEAs and professional associations. He has lectured regularly on PGCE courses for the Cambridge University Faculty of Education, and occasionally at other universities’ Education departments. He has worked with museum educators to develop the teaching of visual literacy and writing in museums and galleries. He has also given keynote conference presentations for the SSAT; for the Institute of Education, London University; for NESTA Futurelab; at conferences in Hungary and New Zealand; and at the launch of the ‘English 21’ consultation on the future of English teaching. He also tutors on MA courses for the Institute of Education, London University, and is the Lead Coordinator for the Creative & Media Diploma, for the Cambridge Area Partnership.

James is a superb trainer and guide. His ideas are genuinely groundbreaking, and he has the easy communication skills of an expert. Most importantly, he causes those who watch his sessions to leave the room and attempt to emulate his ideas as soon as possible.
